PAT Price Guide

There are two generally accepted ways to quote for PAT testing work, in principle the same but different by the definition of the term appliance.

We have adopted the IEE recommended practice of testing, labelling and pricing IEC leads (detachable mains leads) as separate appliances.

Beware the £1.99 per appliance test price ( with small print of IEC leads tested free : actually only £1.00 per test compared with other suppliers). This statement is quite simply not factual.

Consider the appliances on , or around, your desk. For the purposes of this example lets consider

1 standard computer with monitor , an extension lead, a phone charger,a pda charger, 1 fan or heater dependent on season.

Total Cost based on pricing Detachable Mains Leads Separately

Total number of tests would be 1 computer, 1 monitor , 2 Detachable Mains Leads,1 ext lead, 1 phone charger, 1 pda charger,1 fan. 8 tests in total separately labelled tested and costed as recommended. A price of £1.34 per test = £10.72

Total Cost based on Free Detachable Mains Leads

Total number of tests would be 1 computer, 1 monitor,1 ext lead, 1 phone charger, 1 pda charger, 1 fan. 6 tests in total at £1.99 Total = £11.94

This example quite clearly shows that the cost analysis of the free IEC lead model is more expensive. Thats not to say that this example is indicitive of the equipment on , or around, your desk. But it does highlight the real cost of the free IEC lead model as opposed to the advertised half price cost per test as claimed by some.

Fact is, companies have to make a margin to survive, Fact is, the costs aren't dramatically different using either model, Fact is, if they are making this claim of Free IEC leads, what else are they claiming?. Fact is, you decide.
